Trail sign at White House trailhead. It was named White House because the original white settlers in the area thought the water through the Paria River was so pure it could even be served at the White House. Buckskin Gulch water is another story.
We flew into Page on Great Northern Airlines out of DIA. The flight was a bit noisy but uneventful. We observed with some trepidation the hot flat landscape and the sprawl of Lake Powell. We would be walking down into a deep crack in the earth with no idea whether we would emerge successfully at the far end of the crack or for some reason have to fight our way back to the beginning for one reason or the other. Those ideas, however, are suppressed as we think about unloading our packs and equipment, renting a four-wheel drive vehicle, and finding a cheap local motel room.

Bill Meyer -- long time legal amigo. I can't believe I talked him into doing this.

Final prep on motel floor. All the equipment looks nice and clean. Note particularly the boots. See the last photos for comparison. You'll note an ACL brace beside the boots. I wouldn't have made the hike without the brace. I told the Doc to operate back in July so I could be sure to get through. He said, "Try the brace." He was right. It worked great. Helmet has the GoPro mount on it. Things were about to get real messy.
First half of the Topo map showing the route from Wire Pass. By the fourth mile in, we were pretty much lost and had no idea how far we had gone. It's easy to lose a sense of direction, pace and timing in the slot because you can't see the sun, shadows, or look ahead or back far enough to give yourself a sense of place. Also, if you take time to shoot photos or just sit and stare a while at these magnificent rock formations, you can easily lose your sense of time and place. That's how we ended up getting caught in a narrow part of the slot and having to stay overnight in a fairly narrow section -- not a good idea at all and not recommended to anyone. We were very lucky. No rain that night. That's all that needs to be said.
